We all know that dogs can struggle with the heat, and as the owner of a pet services business, I am acutely aware that our precious pooches here in the UK are no exception, especially given the rarity of sunshine. With this in mind, here are some top tips for keeping your dog cool this summer.
It’s crucial to be vigilant, recognize the signs of overheating, and know how to act quickly to avoid sunstroke.
Prevention is Better Than Cure
Never leave your dog alone in a car. Even if you have parked in the shade and left the windows open, it’s dangerous. Over fifty pets fell victim to hot-weather-related deaths last year, and that’s just the reported cases.
Always carry a bowl and plenty of fresh water when you go for a walk. Even when covering a short distance, dogs can overheat very quickly. They won’t recognise the symptoms themselves and won’t let you know until it becomes a serious condition, so keep them hydrated at all times.

Avoid strenuous exercise and long walks if it’s really hot. You can always catch up when it cools down, which probably won’t be too long in the UK!
Hot To Touch – Too Hot To Walk
Avoid hot pavements and surfaces. If it feels hot to the back of your hand, it will feel hot to their paw pads too. If your dog is walking gingerly, the surface they’re walking on may be burning them.
Keep them in the shade as much as possible, especially if they are outside in the garden for extended periods. If you need to leave the house, try to leave them in the coolest room available.
Cool Cuts for Cool Dogs
Give long-haired or fluffy dogs a summer trim. Visit your local dog groomer for a professional sunshine groom. Professional groomers can access areas that are hard for us to reach, often spotting sharp and uncomfortable grasses, seeds, and even ticks that might otherwise go unnoticed. It’s more than just a haircut; it’s a thorough hair-check!

Treat your dog to some cooling toys. Look for toys that can be filled with water and placed in the fridge or freezer before playtime. These can provide refreshing relief during hot days.
Offer a cooling mat. Cooling mats are highly effective and provide a comforting coolness without feeling wet. I’ve tried one myself (just for demonstration purposes, of course) and they are truly soothing!

Watered Inside & Out
- Make sure your dog has constant access to lots of cool, fresh drinking water.
- Carry water with you everytime your dog goes out for a walk.
- Place a couple of ice-cubes in their water bowl to keep the temperature colder for longer. Always supervise dogs with ice cubes. It is not recommended that they be allowed to eat or swallow them.
- Offer the opportunity to submerge a little. Shallow water in a child size paddling pool, under a tree, is dog-heaven!
- Wet their coats regularly with cool showers, hoses or wet towels.
- Make cooling frozen treats out of some of their favourite, healthy foods ie watermelon
Observe & React
Always be vigilant for signs of overheating in your dog, such as:
- Heavy panting
- Loss of energy
- Bright pink tongue and gums
- Extended tongue that leans to the side
- Mucus buildup in the mouth
Recognising these signs early can help you take prompt action to keep your dog safe and cool.

Dogs love the extra opportunities summertime brings to spend time outside, enjoying moments with your family and friends.
Make sure your dog has fun too this summer!
Consider hiring a local dog walker if you’re out all day, which is especially beneficial during hot months. Your dog will appreciate the break from being alone, and you’ll have peace of mind knowing they’re being checked on, hydrated, and made comfortable throughout the day.
